Plastic Pollution in the Ocean
Most plastic that ends up in the sea did not start there. It started in a kitchen, a market stall, a delivery box, a fishing boat. It moved through a waste system that was never built for material this durable, and somewhere along the way it slipped out — down a river, off a landfill edge, over the side of a vessel. The ocean is where it accumulates, not where it comes from.
That distinction matters, because it tells you where the problem can actually be solved.
Why plastic does not go away
Conventional plastic is made from fossil fuels. The polymer chains that make it useful — light, waterproof, cheap, strong — are the same chains that nothing in the natural world knows how to eat. Wood rots. Cotton rots. Polyethylene does not. It fragments.
A plastic bag in seawater does not decompose the way organic matter does. Sunlight and wave action break it into smaller and smaller pieces until the pieces are too small to see. The material is still there. It has simply stopped being visible, which is a very different thing from being gone.
What it does to marine life
Larger debris is the part people photograph: turtles tangled in netting, seabirds with stomachs full of fragments, reef structures smothered under sheeting. Animals mistake floating plastic for food, fill up on something with no nutritional value, and starve with full stomachs.
The smaller fragments are harder to photograph and harder to dismiss. They move up the food chain, from filter feeders to fish to the people who eat them.

Indonesia sits at the centre of this
Indonesia is an archipelago of thousands of islands with a very long coastline, dense coastal populations, and a waste infrastructure that is still catching up with consumption. That combination puts the country at the sharp end of a global problem it did not create.
It also puts Indonesia in an unusual position to do something about it. The same waters carrying plastic debris grow some of the most productive seaweed in the world.
What our foundation does
Yayasan Akar Cinta Bumi Lestari works on both ends of the problem at once.
We remove plastic that is already in the water and on the coast, through cleanup work with coastal communities. And we work on the upstream half — developing a material that does not create this problem in the first place, made from seaweed, designed to degrade completely rather than fragment.
Cleanup alone is a treadmill. You can pull debris out of a bay for a decade and still be behind, because more arrives every week. The material has to change too.

Our Charitable Mission: Protecting Nature and Cleansing Our Oceans
At YAYASAN AKAR CINTA BUMI LESTARI, our mission goes far beyond developing innovative alternatives to traditional plastic. We are driven by a deep, unwavering commitment to ecological restoration, environmental stewardship, and inspiring a profound shift in how humanity relates to the Earth.
Rooted in the philosophy of living in harmony with nature, our charitable initiatives are designed to heal and protect our planet for generations to come.
OUR IDEA
YAYASAN AKAR CINTA BUMI LESTARI
YAYASAN AKAR CINTA BUMI LESTARI is a non-profit organization founded on a shared philosophy: caring for nature. Our mission is to protect the planet through innovation in harmony with nature.

Action-Oriented and Impact-Focused
YAYASAN AKAR CINTA BUMI LESTARI has developed a bioplastic formula from seaweed, which does not compete with food crops, freshwater, or fertile land. Our bioplastic completely degrades in soil, freshwater, or seawater within 3 months, without leaving microplastics behind. This is a real step toward a plastic-free future.

The project is led by a team of experts from three leading Indonesian universities - Universitas Padjadjaran, Politeknik Negeri Bali, and Universitas Udayana - collaborating in scientific research, formula development, and sustainability testing from raw material sourcing to the final product.

But YAYASAN AKAR CINTA BUMI LESTARI is not just about technology—it’s about values. We attract sponsors and volunteers to support environmental and charitable initiatives such as forest restoration, ocean cleanup, biodiversity protection, and environmental education. We aim to do more than just replace plastic—we strive to inspire a lifestyle that cares for the Earth.
